Are you a teacher in the state of Illinois, or a student working toward a teaching certification? Are you interested in pursuing a career in the field of special education? If so, you may be eligible for the Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver Program. This program, offered through the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, may exempt you from tuition as well as all mandatory fees for up to four years while you are working toward your special education certification. To receive this waiver, you will need to enroll in an eligible institution.
If you decide to apply to this program, you will need to fulfill your end of the commitment. Should you be awarded the waiver, you must agree to provide special education in the state of Illinois (this can be at a public, private or parochial school, at the preschool, elementary, or secondary level). Should you fail to fulfill your commitment, the benefits will change over to a loan, and you will owe back the amount of the tuition and fees along with interest. For a dedicated education student who is looking forward to teaching in the state of Illinois, this is an incredible opportunity for a free ride. Apply by March 1.
