Planning to become a certified teacher in the state of Illinois? The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program can help you out financially along the way. This program was created in 1988 by the teachers of the Golden Apple Foundation. Interested students may apply anytime starting in April of their junior year through November 30th of their senior year. To apply, you must be an Illinois student, and you must either nominate yourself or be nominated by a teacher, principle or counselor. If you are a college sophomore in any of the 53 Illinois colleges which participate, you also have the chance to apply.
Each year, up to 100 students are selected from high schools and colleges throughout Illinois to receive tuition assistance of up to $2,500 per year for the first two years, and up to $5,000 per year for the second two years of a four year program. You will need to attend a participating college in order to receive the scholarship award. Additionally, you will be able to receive mentoring and participate in workshops. A $2,000 stipend allows you to spend summer at the Summer Institute receiving additional support. Continuing support is available during your first two years as a teacher.
